I’m not your stereotypical health coach. I don’t provide meal plans, or fitness regimes.
I don’t tell you what to eat, or which muscle group you should focus on.
In fact I don’t do ANYTHING like that. I don’t believe that you can lose weight through diet and exercise alone.
EVEN THOUGH THAT’S WHAT EVERYONE THINKS.
The most important, and most neglected piece of the puzzle, is your brain. And if it’s not on your side, well, then losing weight and getting healthy is going to be nigh on impossible.
Allow me to elaborate.
Come on fatty, you KNOW what to do! (btw, this is just what I hear in my head)
This has never worked for me, long term.
Short term, oh yes, of course! Eat less, move more – wasn’t that an NHS strapline at some point? It’s pretty much what everyone will tell you, and for LOTS of people, this is all they need.
Has it worked for me? Yes, for a while.
Is it a long term fix? Not in the slightest.
So so many of my clients (AND MYSELF, I’m my favourite client!) talk about the ability to stick to something for a short time. Being able to wrench themselves away from their usual foods and routines, for a while. And, quite often, see a result.
It doesn’t work for the long term.
So, why is this? WHY THE HELL ARE WE ALL SO UTTERLY USELESS? ARE WE ALL JUST FAT LAZY PATHETIC WOMEN?
Are we? Are you?
No. We are not. We are humans, and guess what? Our human brains and bodies are way more complicated than simple maths.
Is this familiar to you?
YOU: THAT’S ENOUGH. I need to pack in the crap, and start eating like a real bloody grown up, vegetables, proper portion sizes – stopping when I’m full, etc etc.
BRAIN: OK! Great idea, I’m on board!
YOU: Definitely, I can’t wait to detox all the sugar, caffeine, I’m going to feel SOOO GOOD!
BRAIN: Okay, but just so you know, that sounds shit. I’m not really on board. I don’t like change, it’s a bit scary. Maybe have just a little biscuit. Cos this is going to be HARD A.F. And the more I think about it, I’m not sure I’m up to it.
YOU: Erm, yeh, it is a bit scary. Not sure what’s going to happen if I get really hungry? I’m 90% sure healthy snacks won’t really cut it. Oh crap, what should we do?
BRAIN: PHEW – That was close. I don’t like being hungry. Let’s just stick with what we’re used to. It’s nice and safe here. Warm even. Familiar. Phew.
Okay, that’s quite a brief explanation – but this is what happens in our brains. We’re hard wired for safety, and to be on the look out for danger ALL THE TIME. And your brain has a bit in it, that is 100% responsible for keeping you safe.
Change = danger. Unsafe.
So, as soon as we start to ‘change our diet’ – if the brain at ANY POINT feels unsafe, it will send in the sabotage squad.
The one that chirps in with ‘one won’t hurt’. You’ve had a tough day. You deserve it.
And it will be SO UTTERLY believable, that you won’t question it.
It’s not your fault BUT you can do something about it.
I’ve learned how to override the system. Making it easy. And I’d love to show you how.
