EFT (or tapping) is heralded as one of the quickest and easiest ways to reduce stress, dissolve painful memories and boost confidence. So, why isn’t it working for you? Here are 5 mistakes I see, that could be the problem…
Firstly – I just want to applaud you for even trying. First step is DONE! And often it’s the hardest bit, just getting started! So let me help you out?
I see lots of people just start tapping, and hoping for the best. Tapping on the points and then getting frustrated when nothing actually seems to change.
HOWEVER, in order to really see results, you have to be relaxed and ‘tuned in’ to your body – what physical sensations are you feeling?
2. Secondly.. getting the wording right? Tricky I know. Its the thing people ask me about most. Here’s what I suggest.
Narrate. I mean, talk to yourself in your head. You could do it outloud too, if that feels good. Literally narrate exactly what you feel like. Whilst tapping on each point, say a sentence on each point. And then add in the sensations too, the ones you identified above.
And by this, I mean, you’re thinking logically. Which might be “I’m really stressed, but that’s because I’ve got a lot on, and well, everyone does, and so I don’t know why I’m finding it so hard, maybe I should just put up with it…” And then people stop feeling the sensations, and start thinking logically about it.
AND YOU CANNOT SOLVE AN EMOTIONAL PROBLEM WITH LOGIC!
YOU CANNOT! If you could, then no-one in the world would be sad. Or angry. And people saying ‘just get over it’ would be the all holy oracles of the world, and you’d feel better immediately. (Right? right).
You have to feel it. Question it. WHY are you so stressed? I mean, REALLY? Is it because of work? Or is it because you don’t feel heard, and are full of doubt, or you think you shouldn’t be able to feel better. It’s so much more nuanced than we give ourselves credit for.
Ok – what else? Oh yeh…
I’m sorry to say it. But perhaps you’re hanging on to that, for a reason. One you’ve probably not thought out loud yet, but one that is very clear. Holding on to stress or sadness, and particularly anger – can be because you DO NOT WANT to let go. What does NOT being stressed or angry mean? For you. I can talk all day about resistance, I know ALL the reasons, (the subconscious ones I mean). So, if you want help unpacking it, give me a shout.
And lastly – number 5… You want a quick fix.
And whilst YES, you can get HUGE results from a really quick and dirty tapping sesh, give me 10 mins, you’ll DEF feel more relaxed. But for proper deep, long lasting results? You’ve got to give it the time it deserves.
